ROUNDS

Boxing vs MMA vs Muay Thai: differences in rounds and rest periods

Each combat sport structures its rounds differently, and that completely changes how you should set up your training timer. Here's a quick comparison of rounds and rest periods in boxing, MMA and Muay Thai.

Boxing

12 three-minute rounds with 1 minute of rest is the standard in professional heavyweight bouts. In training it's common to cut it down to 6-8 rounds while you build up your conditioning.

MMA

MMA fights are usually 5 minutes per round, with 1 minute of rest, and normally 5 rounds in title fights (3 for the rest). The longer round makes up for the ground phases, where the pace changes compared with pure striking.

Muay Thai

The "art of eight limbs" uses 3-minute rounds just like boxing, but with 2 minutes of rest instead of one: the clinch and the knee strikes demand more recovery between rounds.

Tabata / HIIT

Nothing like combat in format, but it's commonly used as conditioning work alongside it: 8 intervals of 20 seconds of all-out effort with 10 seconds of rest.
